A BOGEY-BOGEY FINISH has cost Pádraig Harrington a place in next month’s US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
The Dubliner needed to finish in the top 13 of the field at the 36-hole sectional qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey and looked well positioned to do just that with only a couple of holes to play this afternoon.

But the Dubliner carded a bogey on the par-three 17th and dropped another shot on the par-four 18th to slide from sixth in the standings into a tie for 16th on a one-under par total, two shots shy of the automatic qualification mark and one off a play-off for the remaining spots.
One of Europe’s vice-captains for this year’s Ryder Cup was aiming to play in his first US Open since finishing in a tie for 21st at the 2013 edition at Merion, which was won by England’s Justin Rose.
The result is the latest disappointment in a difficult season for the 44-year-old, which has included recent missed cuts at the Wells Fargo Championship, The Players Championship and the Irish Open.
Among those to secure qualification today for the season’s second Major were France’s Gregory Bourdy, England’s Lee Slattery and Sweden’s Alex Noren.
