Shock in Sweden as Gunnar Nelson loses split decision

The SBG fighter was a big favourite but lost to Rick Story.

IRISH MMA FANS haven’t had a lot to feel down about lately but that might change now after the fan favourite Gunnar ‘Gunni’ Nelson’s split decision loss to Rick Story at UFC Fight Night 53 in Stockholm tonight.

With Cathal Pendred already winning on the night, expectations were high that the Icelandic fighter from SBG would follow suit but after a tough bout with Story, the judges scored it 47-48, 49-46 and 50-44 in favour of the American.

Story’s striking damaged Nelson throughout and Gunni was dropped in the fourth round but Story was unable to finish him off.

Both fighters traded big punches towards the finish, but it was Story who finished the stronger and that was enough to sway the judges in the final tally.
