Former Ireland women's coach named as USA assistant for November internationals

Greg McWilliams has been in America for the last two years.

GREG MCWILLIAMS, THE former Ireland women’s attack coach who played an integral role in the side’s success under Philip Doyle, has been appointed US Eagles backs coach for their upcoming November internationals.

McWilliams, who has spent two years in America as Yale University’s director of rugby, has been added to Gary Gold’s new coaching team for the games against Germany and Georgia.

Gold, currently director of rugby at Worcester Warriors, will officially assume the role at the end of this season with Dave Hewitt, the former All Black, taking temporary charge in the meantime.

McWilliams, a former school teacher at St Michael’s College who guided the school to a first senior schools title in 2007, has been named as backs and attack coach for the Eagles’ European tour, which gets underway in Frankfurt on 18 November.

He enjoyed great success during his time with the Ireland women and was part of the backroom team for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, as well as the victorious 2013 Six Nations campaign. McWilliams was also coach of the Leinster U19s from 2010-2014.

He will work with former Connacht out-half AJ MacGinty, who has been included in the USA squad for their first-ever Test match against Germany.
