TONIGHT’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE match between FC Basel and Schalke 04 was interrupted when Greenpeace protesters abseiled from the roof of the stadium and stopped play.
Four protesters unfurled a 28 metre-wide banner at St. Jakob-Park which read “Don’t Foul the Arctic” and “#FreeTheArctic30.”
The protest was aimed at Russian exploration company Gazprom who are an official partner of the Champions League as well as Schalke’s shirt sponsor.
Thirty environmental activists were detained in Russia last month when their ship, the Arctic Sunrise, was seized during a protest against drilling.
