Greek drama: Protest expected at Shamrock Rovers' Europa League game

Michael O’Neill’s side and the club’s fans deal with disruption caused by a general strike ahead of the Group A showdown with PAOK Salonika tonight.

SHAMROCK ROVERS FACE PAOK Salonika in their latest Europa League showdown tonight (kick-off 8.05pm Irish time).

But the Hoops’ pre-game preparations have been affected by a general strike in Greece this week.

Manager Michael O’Neill was forced to cancel a planned walk on a beach this morning.

RTÉ report they team instead went to a shopping centre but have been in their hotel for most of the day.

Fans were concerned about getting to the game amongst the disruption and those who have made the trip have been inconvenienced.

The club today explained they’ve made arrangements for supporters to get to the ground this evening with buses leaving the seafront well in advance. Check here for full details.

Greek police – who expect a protest at the stadium – are warning Rovers fans not to travel to the game on their own.

PAOK are unbeaten in their last seven European games while Rovers are searching for their first point in the group, losing 3-1 to Spurs in London last time out.
