Great Scott! 'Delighted' Evans qualifies for London 2012

Irish number one Scott Evans will compete in the men’s badminton singles in London this summer.

SCOTT EVANS IS the newest member of Ireland’s Olympic party after his place in the men’s singles badminton at London 2012 was confirmed.

The Dubliner, who is currently ranked eighth in Europe and 74th in the world, missed out on automatic qualification for his second Olympic games by just one ranking place.

But as the first reserve, Evans was at the top of the queue if any National Olympic Committee turned down their place and as expected, official confirmation came through this morning.

“OTHER BIG NEWS FOR TODAY – it’s OFFICIAL,” he tweeted. “I have qualified for London2012 :-) delighted to be part of the Irish team!!!”

Evans, who competed at Beijing in 2008, joins women’s number one Chloe Magee in the Irish badminton squad. Magee and her brother Sam are currently the third reserves on the mixed doubles list.

We love it… here’s the confirmed schedule for this summer’s Ashes series
