GORT CRUISED TO a convincing Galway SHC semi-final success over Beagh at Kenny Park, Athenry.
All-Ireland champions Portumna will offer a far tougher test in the 14 December decider out west.
Though underdogs Beagh were lively initially, Gort controlled vast chunks of the first half. With Padraig Landers prominent, Beagh accumulated a 0-4 to 0-1 advantage by the seventh minute before Gort then seized the initiative.
Mattie Murphy’s team rifled over five points without reply as Aidan Harte, Michael Mullins, Gerry Quinn (2), and Richie Cummins found the range. Kevin Keehan terminated a 17-minute search for a Beagh score with a free, but Gort responded hitting 1-2 on the spin.
Cummins and Quinn created a 27th minute goal for Gerard O’Donoghue which enabled Gort to depart with a 1-9 to 0-6 interval lead.
Beagh improved after the restart trimming the deficit to four points, but they weren’t sufficiently clinical. The underdogs only registered four points from 15 second period scoring opportunities as Gort closed the deal with the minimum of fuss.
Scorers for Gort: Gerry Quinn 0-7 (6fs), Richie Cummins 0-4, Gerard O’Donoghue 1-0, Aidan Harte 0-1, Michael Mullins 0-1, Albert Mullins 0-1, Michael Cummins 0-1.
Scorers for Beagh: Kevin Keehan 0-6 (6fs), Padraig Landers 0-2, Redmond McDermott 0-1, Rory Gantley 0-1(f).
