Free agents Given, Brown and Bruce train with non-league club in bid to keep fit

The former Premier League trio are currently searching for new employers.

WITHOUT A CLUB following his release from Stoke City, Shay Given is one of three former Premier League players currently training with Macclesfield Town in order to keep fit.

The 41-year-old goalkeeper, former Manchester United defender Wes Brown and ex-Hull captain Alex Bruce are maintaining their fitness levels and doing some coaching work with the Vanarama National League side during pre-season.

Given wasn’t offered a new deal at Stoke at the end of last season while Brown was released by Blackburn and Brown let go by Hull.

Macclesfield manager John Askey said all three had made a positive impact on the squad since joining up with the non-league outfit.

“They have been training with us and they are great to have around,” he said.

“It says a lot about the Football Club that they came in to training one day, and then came in the next and the next.

“That shows that they are enjoying what we do and that we are doing it the right way.”

Macclesfield’s assistant manager Steve Watson, who played alongside Given at Newcastle United, added: “It’s great for the lads to have them here. Wes and Alex are doing their coaching badges so helped to run a session yesterday whilst Shay has been taking the goalkeepers.”
