Dublin and Belfast to host Giro d'Italia start next year - reports

Officials in Dublin and Belfast are expected to confirm the news on Thursday.

IT IS UNDERSTOOD government officials will this week announce that the Giro d’Italia will start in Ireland next year.

It will be the first time a cycling Grand Tour has visited these shores since the the infamous 1998 Tour de France.

Shane Stokes reported this week that Giro organiser RCS Sport were on the brink of an announcement after months of speculation that the Grand Partenza would be staged between Dublin and Belfast.

And last night, it was confirmed that government representatives and city officials would make an announcement on Thursday.

“One of the world’s most renowned international sporting events is coming to Ireland,” a statement reads. “The event will be staged in Belfast and Dublin in May, 2014. Minister Michael Ring and the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise Ó Muirí, will be on hand with event representatives in Dublin City Council’s Wood Quay Venue to mark the announcement this Thursday.”
