Ireland women's World Cup campaign ends with loss to Germany

THE IRISH WOMEN’S World Cup campaign ended in disappointment today, as they were beaten 2-0 by Germany in Heidenheim.

Sue Ronan’s side’s hopes of qualification had ended before this evening’s match, nonetheless they still managed to put in a brave performance in difficult circumstances.

Melanie Behringer opened the scoring on 27 minutes following a swift German counter-attack after the Irish team began promisingly.

Germany then doubled their advantage through Anja Mittag’s fantastic volley on 34 minutes, giving their opponents a mountain to climb in the process.

The Irish team couldn’t reduce the deficit in the second period, though Louise Quinn went close on 70 minutes, as her header flew just past the post.

Ultimately though, they were left frusutrated, as the world number 2-ranked side held out for a victory.
