Grealish impresses but Germany too good for Ireland under-21s

The Villa star boosted his reputation yet again with another fine display

ASTON VILLA STAR Jack Grealish produced another impressive display as Ireland were beaten 2-0 in the UEFA U21 Championships Qualifying Round away to Germany in Halle yesterday.

The visitors, and Grealish in particular at the fulcrum of Ireland’s attack, caught the eye, as they kept Germany at bay in the first half, even if they were fortunate not to go a goal down when the hosts appeared to have a perfectly legitimate effort ruled out for offside.

However, an improved second-half performance from the hosts ultimately saw Philipp Hofmann and Jonas Hofmann grab early second-half goals to put the game’s outcome beyond doubt.

The result means Germany secure their play-off spot as group winners, while Noel King’s side will now begin preparing for their next qualifying campaign in 2015.

GERMANY: Horn, Günter, Geis, Bittencourt, Leitner, Can, Korb, Knoche, P Hofmann (Arnold 65), Schulz (J.Hofmann 46), Younes (Kachunga 74)

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Lawlor, Griffin, Connors, Wilkinson, Lenihan, Grealish, Watkins-Clark, Byrne (Sweeney 61),  Hoban, Long, Sadlier (Garmston 65).
