Boxing clever: Foreman, left, and Lowry. @ShaneLowryGolf

SHANE LOWRY KNOWS he will need a knockout blow this week if he is to land a last-minute invitation to the Masters.

The Clara native met former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman as he gets set for the Shell Houston Open, the final tournament before the qualifying cut-off for Augusta.

The top 50 in the world rankings are automatically invited to play, and with Lowry currently in 69th, it seems that only a win will do to secure his  spot at the season’s first Major.

But a good performance by Lowry at Redstone could open the door for more tournaments on the lucrative PGA Tour, starting with the Valero Texas Open next week.

He tees off for his first round at 2.10pm tomorrow (Irish time) playing alongside Ben Kohles and Korea’s DH Lee.

Rory McIlroy, who was deposed as world number one earlier this week when Tiger Woods returned to winning ways, plays alongside Dustin Johnson and Keegan Bradley.
