The 37-year-old Kildare man moved in to coaching as the Tigers backs coach after retiring in 2013 and now is now embedded in the role.

Murphy moved in to coaching immediately after retiring, initially as assistant backs coach under Paul Burke who replaced Leinster-bound Matt O’Connor as head coach.

While Richard Cockerill will remain as Director of Rugby, next season Murphy will work under new head coach, 34-year-old Aaron Mauger.

The ex-Tigers will be joined in the coaching ticket by defence coach Scott Hansen who follows Mauger from a role with the Canterbury Crusaders and forwards coach Richard Blaze, who also has a new three-year deal to celebrate.

“We’re delighted that Richard and Geordan have agreed new contracts because they are outstanding young coaches with a big future,” Cockerill said in a statement today.

“They have taken the first steps in their coaching career at one of the biggest clubs in the game, they continue to develop very well here and are an important part of the coaching team.”

On the playing front, Dubliner Niall Morris is also among those who have committed their future to the fourth-placed Premiership side.
