New season, same old cracking goals for Gareth Bale

The Welsh tyro roofed a drive against Swindon in his first game of Spurs’ preseason.

GARETH BALE PICKED up where he left off last season by rifling in a cracker against cross-city foes, Swindon.

The Welsh attacker, who won the PFA Player of the Year award last season, opened the scoring for Spurs in their first game of the pre-season. The Londoners, who also gave run-outs to Jermaine Defoe and Gylfi Sigurdsson, were pegged back when Andy Williams’ shot was deflected over Brad Friedel.

Bale is a transfer target for Real Madrid and Manchester United but is understood to have committed himself to Tottenham, and coach, Andre Villas Boas, for one more tilt at securing Champions League qualification.

Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris praised his teammate and warned that there was more to come. “It’s good to see him in good form and this is just the beginning,” said the Frenchman.
