Galway almost clinch win but Longford hold on for scoreless draw

Lacklustre affair at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Galway United 0
Longford Town 0

GALWAY UNITED AND Longford Town played out a drab scoreless draw in a real end of season Aitricity Premier Division clash at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Galway United substitute Padraic Cunningham came close to winning it for the hosts in the last minute of the game but his effort from a narrow angle was smothered by Paul Skinner.

Galway United dominated the opening exchanges and centre back Stephen Folan went close from a corner after 11 minutes. Kevin Devaney delivered an in-swinging corner from the left and Folan flashed a header just over the crossbar.

Longford Town came into this game having already been relegated but David O’Sullivan almost opened the scoring for the Alan Mathews’ side in the 22nd minute. A cross from the right found O’Sullivan with his back to goal and the striker did brilliantly to turn and shoot but his effort was straight at Conor Winn.

Devaney was the home side’s main threat and he had United’s best chance of the half on 36 minutes. Ryan Connolly’s powerful shot was blocked back to the United captain and he found Devaney to his left. But the former Sligo Rovers man saw his left-footed effort well saved by Skinner in the Longford goal.

Ryan Connolly almost cost the home side a goal in the 69th minute. The captain looked to find goalkeeper Winn with a back pass but O’Sullivan nipped in to intercept. The striker ran through one-on-one with Winn but he put his effort narrowly wide of the left-hand post.
