Canning makes surprise return as Galway edge out Cats in pulsating affair

The Tribesmen won their second game of the campaign to move ahead of the All-Ireland champions.

Galway 0-20
Kilkenny 0-18

Jason Byrne reports from Pearse Stadium

JOE CANNING MADE a shock comeback for Galway as they disposed of Kilkenny at a windy Pearse Stadium.

The clash was largely a shootout between Jason Flynn and Richie Hogan before both were withdrawn in the latter stages of the contest with Hogan picking up a hamstring injury after controlling the Cats attack and firing 0-10.

To the delight of the home support, Canning was introduced at the interval after being named as a late addition to the Galway bench and showed signs of a full recovery from his broken finger to strike four crucial points in the game.

But Flynn was once again the man for Anthony Cunningham’s charges in the absence of Conor Cooney and Canning – firing 0-11 and showing crucial accuracy from the placed ball to split the posts time and time again.

In the opening half Galway held the advantage of the strong wind but didn’t make it count as they would have liked – leading 0-11 to 0-8 at the break with Andy Smith, Dean Higgins and James Regan adding to Flynn’s scores.

After the restart Kilkenny were still left chasing the game as Canning announced his arrival with a sublime score as Walter Walsh, Mark Kelly and Lester Ryan kept Kilkenny in touch as they began to chase a goal.

John Power fired against the post as Flynn and Hogan continued their shootout at either end, before Colm Callanan produced two wonderful saves to deny Jonjo Farrell late on, and Galway sealed the win with late scores from two Canning frees.

Scorers for Galway: Jason Flynn 0-11 (0-7f, 0-1 65), Joe Canning 0-4 (0-2f, 0-1 SC), Dean Higgins 0-2, Andy Smith, James Regan and Cathal Mannion 0-1 each.

Scorers for Kilkenny: Richie Hogan 0-10 (0-8f), Lester Ryan and Mark Kelly 0-2 each, Padraig Walsh, Walter Walsh, Jonjo Farrell and William Phelan 0-1 each.
