NEW RECRUIT JAMES KAVANAGH picked up the Man of the Match award as Galway started their 2014 FBD Insurance League campaign in impressive style in Tuam.
After Sligo’s Adrian Marren pointed with a free for the game’s first score, Alan Mulholland’s side replied with an Eoin Concannon goal. That was about as good as it got in a low scoring first half — admittedly played in woeful conditions — and the teams went in at the break with Galway leading 1-2 to 0-4.
With the wind in the second half, the Tribesmen kicked on thanks to two quick goals. The first came when Greg Higgins set up Mike Martin before Concannon added his second of the game.

Former Kildare forward Kavanagh picked up his first score in Galway colours on 53 minutes, a point that was met with a huge roar from the home fans as they watched their side run out 3-10 to 0-8 winners.
Defending Champions Leitrim won the other game in this group by 1-14 to 1-11 against GMIT in Cloone.
In Group A, it finished a draw at 1-14 apiece between Roscommon and IT Sligo at St Brigid’s GAA club in Kiltoom.
Roscommon started the brighter of the two sides and thanks to a goal from Conor Devaney they looked well in control but Michael Moyles men were not out of this contest and a well taken Evan Regan goal meant the sides went in level at 1-6 at the break.
The second-half was tit-for-tat throughout but with just minutes left on the clock it looked like the students had won it after working themselves into a two point lead.
However, scores from Neil Collins and Cathal Cregg rescued a deserved point for the Rossies.
