GALWAY’S PASSAGE TO the quarter-finals was already safely secured but still the introduction of a substitute in the 68th minute of their clash tonight in Markievicz Park produced a huge cheer from their supporters.
Four years after his last senior championship outing had ended in defeat against Cork at Croke Park, Michael Meehan crowned his inter-county comeback when coming on at the end of their landslide win over Donegal.
He didn’t get on the scoresheet but there was still time for the Caltra man to lay on an assist pass for team captain Gary O’Donnell to swing over a late point at the Sligo venue.
Galway ran out 15-point victors with the presence of Meehan a major boost as they get set for a last eight tie against league champions Kerry in Croke Park next Sunday.

Meehan came out of retirement in March three years after he had called time due to a troublesome ankle injury. He was part of the squad when they clinched victory in the Division 2 league final against Kildare in April but this evening was a major milestone as he saw championship action for the first time.
Great to see Mikey Meehan back in championship action with @Galway_GAA. Phenomenal footballer on his day. #GAA
Meehan emerged as a fantastic football talent from a young age when he won the Hogan Cup with St Jarlath’s in 2002, followed by All-Ireland senior club title that he claimed with Caltra in 2004.
The attacker also shone in Galway’s All-Ireland U21 title wins in 2002 and 2005 but injuries have stalled his senior career.
He’ll hope this was a turning point as Galway bounced back from the low note of their Connacht final slump in spectacular fashion.
