Galway United end tough week with win in five-goal thriller

Finn Harps were edged out despite an impressive rally.

Galway United 3

Finn Harps 2

GALWAY UNITED PUT a difficult week behind them to edge past Finn Harps in an exciting five-goal contest at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The midweek departure of manager Tommy Dunne after their loss to Cork City was disruptive but goals from Vinny Faherty, Enda Curran and Colm Horgan gave them a 3-0 lead against Finn Harps.

Ruairi Keating and Adam Hanlon brought Harps to within a goal of their hosts but United held on for a deserved win.

The home side made the perfect start to the game and led 2-0 after just ten minutes, with Faherty notching his 12th league goal of the season after a Ryan Connolly free kick after seven minutes.

Enda Curran doubled Galway’s lead three minutes later with a powerful drive from 25 yards, having gone close just before that from a similar range but Ciaran Gallagher stood no chance second time round.

Colm Horgan gave Galway further comfort after half time with a third goal. Faherty’s cross from the right was met by Horgan and his looping header beat Gallagher less than 40 seconds after the interval.

Keating pulled one back for the visitors after a defence-splitting pass from Sean Houston.

And substitute Adam Hanlon bagged their second in the 75th minute after he got in behind Colm Horgan but United held on to put their midweek woes behind them.
