TYRONE’S RONAN O’NEILL and Westmeath’s Derek McNicholas have won the Opel GAA/GPA Players of the Month awards for May in football and hurling respectively.
O’Neill starred for Mickey Harte’s side against Derry, scoring 2-2 in their 3-14 to 0-12 demolition of the Oak Leaf County in their Ulster SFC quarter-final clash.
The corner-forward continued his impressive league campaign to cement his status as one of Tyrone’s most important footballers as they bid to win their first Ulster title since 2010.

The Omagh man saw off competition from Offaly’s Niall McNamee and Cavan’s Martin Reilly to claim the award.
McNicholas starred for the Lake County as they racked up three round-robin victories in the Leinster championship to secure their passage into the main provincial draw.
The Castlepollard forward tallied 2-8 in victories against Offaly, Kerry and Carlow but was unable to prevent Galway running riot in his first June outing, their Leinster quarter-final clash last weekend, failing to get on the score-sheet in their 17-point loss.
McNicholas was selected for the award ahead of Dublin forward Niall McMorrow and Tipperary sharp-shooter John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer.
Both award-winners each received a trophy and €1000 for their efforts.
