BEDLAM ENSUED AT CASTERA-VERDUZAN, in France, at the weekend as a jump race perfectly encapsulated its status as a beginners’ chase.
The 11-horse field headed off in all compass points after rider was unseated at the first fence. Pure, hilarious bedlam ensued thereafter with all but two horses heading in the right direction and the other nine zig-zagging all over the course.
The eventual winner appeared to be jockey Maxime Le Galliard and his mount. However, according to Racing Post, Le Galliard was disqualified for starting the initial pile-up. Trainer Jacques Ortet commented, “I’ve been coming to Castera-Verduzan for 25 years and I’ve never seen such a mess.”
