Footballer yellow-carded for eating banana in goal-scoring celebration

Senegalese striker Famara Diedhiou was showing solidarity with Barcelona’s Dani Alves.

SENEGALESE FOOTBALLER FAMARA DIEDHIOU decided to wade into the fightback against racism and earned a yellow card for his troubles.

Diedhiou was thrown a banana by a teammate on the sideline after he scored a penalty for his French third division side Gazélec Ajaccio. He took a bite out of the banana but was booked by referee Luke Hamel.

The celebration was a nod to Dani Alves’ gesture when a Villareal supporter threw the fruit at him. The Barcelona defender responded by taking a mouthful of banana and resuming with his corner kick duties. Alves’ remarkably calm reaction sparked a social media campaign, which declared #SomoTodosMacaos [We Are All Monkeys].

The bright note for the Senegalese striker is that his penalty proved the match-winner.
