Edgar: UFC 'smart' to cash in on McGregor before the bubble bursts

“The Notorious” will be in Rio next week with a front-row seat for Jose Aldo’s title defence.

ONE OF THE UFC’S top featherweights says it’s no surprise that Conor McGregor is skipping the queue for a title shot.

Number three-ranked Frankie Edgar says UFC bosses would be smart to cash in on the Dubliner before he is beaten.

“The Notorious” flies out to Rio next week to get a close look at the man he hopes to face next — whether that is champion Jose Aldo or his challenger Chad Mendes.

Edgar is focused on his own fight against another of the division’s top men, Cub Swanson, next month but he knows that a win by no means guarantees a title shot while McGregor is in the picture.

“As a promoter, it’s probably the smart thing to do,”  he told ESPN.com this week.

“[McGregor] has got a lot of buzz going. Why have him lose before they can make money on that fight?

“Of course, I’ll be upset if that happens. I’m sure Cub will be upset. But that’s the nature of this game.

“I do want to fight for the title after I beat Cub, but if I have to fight somebody else, what am I going to do? I can’t sit around and feel sorry for myself. I have to go to work and get it done.”

Even when he’s answering questions on food poisoning, Miguel Angel Jimenez is a legend
