A REMATCH BETWEEN WBO world featherweight champion Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz is close to being agreed, according to Santa Cruz’s father.
Belfast fighter Frampton (23-0, 14KOs) defeated Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18KOs) on a majority decision to strip the then-unbeaten Mexican of his featherweight crown and become a two-weight world champion in New York on 30 July.
That victory activated an automatic clause for a rematch and Jose Santa Cruz has revealed that a deal for the second installment is close to being confirmed and his son is already in the gym preparing for the bout.

It’s believed that Frampton wants the fight to take place in December with Las Vegas or Los Angeles the likely location, although the Northern Irishman has already said that he won’t fight Santa Cruz in LA.
“Well it seems that the plans are going well and [Frampton] will provide a direct rematch as my son wanted,” Jose Santa Cruz told ESPN Deportes.
“My son has returned to the gym. He said it could be in Las Vegas or Los Angeles, let’s hope so.
“Leo has not signed anything, but they have already said yes to doing the fight — which will be a direct rematch.
“We are just missing the date and venue but it would be the end of the year and in one of those two locations.
“Truthfully, it’s very important for me that the fight is going to be in Los Angeles or Las Vegas.”
