THE 2017 FOOTBALLER of the Year will be announced tomorrow night, with four names in the running for the big prize.
James McCarthy, Stephen Cluxton, Andy Moran and David Clarke are the players nominated and the winner will be confirmed at the 2017 PWC All-Stars from Dublin’s Convention Centre on Friday evening.
The nominees, which were decided by a committee made up of Gaelic Games correspondents and chaired by GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail, were voted on by inter-county players.
Con O’Callaghan, Sean Powter and Michael Daly have been nominated for the Young Footballer of the Year award, but it’s a prize O’Callaghan should win comfortably.
McCarthy (27), Moran (33), Clarke (33) and Cluxton (35) are all bidding to win the Footballer of the Year gong for the first time in their careers.
It’s believed McCarthy – who won man of the match in the All-Ireland final – and Moran – on the back of his best year in a Mayo jersey – are the frontrunners to claim the prize.

Andy Moran easily, not even up for debate
@Tony Boyle: Actually it is up for debate.
@Ciara Baines: Ciara I notice you seem to be the42 Dublin police. Every comment you seem to make is either a sarcastic quip or a swipe at someone in defence of an article or someone else’s point.
Interested in hearing your actual opinion on an article soon. Who do you think should win player of he year?
@Olllie B: The same if you say a bad word about Mayo they are on your case. So it works both ways
@Olllie B: doesn’t have to be bad you can’t say anything and you offend them. Delicate little flowers they are
@Desheen: I wouldn’t call it sarcasm to say that it is actually up for debate, there are 4 players nominated and it’s not a foregone conclusion that either Moran or McCarthy will, the two front runners for me.
@Dave Murray: Sorry Dave. Sorry Ciara. It was before lunch and I was being b*tchy!!
@Tony Boyle: I think you will find it hard to argue against Stephen Cluxton. Moran had a good year but Cluxton’s game management allowed Dublin to win he All Ireland
@Tony Boyle: ye
Can’t see the losing team getting it twice in a row. James McCarthy had a fantastic season anyway and really showed himself as a class act in the last 20min of all Ireland final when was needed
If Mayo won Moran easily but because Dublin won has to be McCarthy
I agree to a certain point but for me Andy Moran was the standout player all year and deserves it
@Ronan Barrett: Moran was brilliant from semi final on. I didn’t think he was particularly impressive before then.
@Augustus hoop: sorry quarter final on
David Clarke?? Some very suspect kickouts at crucial times in the all Ireland final don’t think he’s worth an all star even
@Dimitar Berbatov: I’m going to take the opinion of a Bulgarian on matters GAA with a pinch of salt !
Has to be Andy
Give it to Moran because Footballer of the year and the Rose of Tralee are the only things Mayo have a chance of winning..
Id give it mccarthy as he was the most consistent over the whole year. If ya look at the amount of games andy Moran played his scoring record wasnt great and there was quite a few games at the start of the canpaign where he did fuk all. He had two super games against kerry and a decent final so if he does win it then fair play to him. I dont think james will lose any sleep over it if he loses out
It’s not McCarthy’s fault the opposition in Leinster are piss poor, he was also excellent against Tyrone and Mayo, mind.
@Olllie B: rosscommon are brutal andy moran had a stinker the 1st day. Why did ya change your name i preferred alan b
@Olllie B: Don’t let the facts get in the way . Last 4 games for the Dubs this year
Beat Kildare… Division 1
Beat Monaghan….. Division 1
Beat Tyrone …… Division 1
Beat Mayo …..Division 1
How many Division 1 teams did Mayo beat along the way?
McCarthy or Moran are definitely the two front runners, I don’t think McCarthy will lose too much sleep if he doesn’t win but it’s nice recognition all the same.
Andy Moran has been a revelation this year
Mayo had a tougher run in and therefore Moran deserves it? Dublin played 3 division 1 teams plus a newly promoted division 1 team. Mayo played 2 division 1 teams plus a relegated division 1 team and a newly promoted one. The rest should have been cannon fodder for them but they made hard work of it.
I’m a Dub and I reckon Moran deserves it for getting Mayo to a final. Been a great player. Cluxton has the medal he wanted from day one. 5 of them actually.
Dublin get to league final as well asAll Ireland winners.League should count.
Mayo player probly get it why because there not all ireland champions
