AMERICAN FOOTBALLER FREDDY Adu, who in 2004 was tipped for greatness after signing for DC United and attracting interest from a number of clubs including Chelsea and Man United, was this week released by Serbian side FK Jagodina.
The former prodigy looks set to join the growing list of ‘Football/Championship Manager legends’ — players who were brilliant in the cult computer game but failed to match such excellence in real life, despite showing enormous potential at a young age.

After the news broke this week, former US international Adu sought to play down claims that he had been ‘released’ by the Serbian club, pointing out on Twitter that he had only signed a six-month contract in the first place.
His current difficulties are a far cry from the superstardom he seemed set for just a decade ago — making his professional debut with DC United at 14, he was referred to as the ‘next Pele’ and even starred alongside the Brazilian legend in a soda commercial (see below).
After bursting onto the scene, he has struggled ever since, having short stints at a number of clubs including Benfica, Monaco, Philadelphia Union and Blackpool, yet failing to hold down a regular first-team place at any of those sides for long.
Easy guys I signed a 6 month contract. And it's done now. I didn't get "released". Knew I was leaving a few months ago. #truth
