IF, LIKE US, you’ve lost count of the number of hours spent playing Football Manager as you meticulously planned your assault on the Champions League with Brighton Hove & Albion, you’ll be glad to hear this bit of news.
A new feature-length documentary, entitled ‘An Alternative Reality’, has been made about the hugely-popular computer game, which “examines the game’s impact on the culture of football and its influence within the professional game” and will include interviews with its creators as well as some of its most famous fans.
“The documentary isn’t our story – it’s the story of the people who escape to the alternative reality of being a football manager, and the effect this has had on their lives,” says Miles Jacobson, studio director of Sports Interactive.
It’s also the story of how a computer game made by football fans has become a part of the world it set out to replicate.
“But it’s not just for people who play – it’s also for people who’ve ever wondered why others spend so much time escaping into this world.”

The film will premiere in at least 26 VUE Cinemas around the UK on 7 October, with a live interactive Q&A session with Miles Jacobson to follow directly afterwards.
Unfortunately, there is no mention of an Irish screening yet but we’re thinking of starting a campaign to get it shown at VUE Liffey Valley in Dublin. In the meantime, why not tweet VUE or leave a Facebook message expressing your support for an Irish viewing.
