Disappointment for Bell as Mikaela Shiffrin becomes America's golden girl

Florence Bell failed to finish the women’s slalom in Sochi.

FLORENCE BELL’S OLYMPICS is over after she failed to finish in the women’s slalom this evening.

Tough conditions at Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre saw 21 of the starters fail to complete their first run.

But Bell got through safely in a time of 1:07.84, leaving her in 55th place ahead of the second session under the Sochi floodlights.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but it was still quite tough,” the 17-year-old said.

Bell failed to finish on her second run as world champion Mikaela Shiffrin of America held on to her lead and won her first Olympic gold at the age of 18.

Marlies Schild took silver for the second successive Olympics while her Austrian team-mate Kathrin Zettel won bronze.
