Finalists dominate camogie All Stars list

Six players from Wexford’s All-Ireland winning camogie squad are among the women that have been honoured with 2011 All Stars.

WEXFORD AND GALWAY have claimed six camogie All Stars apiece for 2011.

All-Ireland Champions Wexford see captain Ursula Jacob, Claire O’Connor, Catherine O’Loughlin, Una Leacy, Katrina Parrock and Kate Kelly collect further honours following their success in September.

Team boss JJ Doyle has also been named O’Neill’s Manager of the Year for leading the county’s Senior and Intermediate teams to national glory.

Finalists Galway also have six winner: Therese Maher, Ann Marie Hayes, Lorraine Ryan, goalkeeper Susan Earner, who collects her first All Star, team captain Brenda Hanney as well as midfield star Niamh Kilkenny.

Cork have two All Stars, having been beaten by Wexford en route to the final, with Anna Geary claiming the wing-spot and Jennifer O’Leary recognised for her efforts on behalf of the ladies in red. Tipperary’s Jill Horan is the other inclusion, in midfield.

“(The awards) top off another fantastic year for camogie as the country’s leading players take centre stage,” Association President Joan O’Flynn said.

“Congratulations to all of those who received a nomination and to those who were awarded an All Star, Soaring Star and Intermediate Soaring Star. In addition, congratulations to the 2011 O’Neills Manager of the Year, JJ Doyle on his wonderful achievement of leading two teams to All Ireland glory.

“The All Star awards are a prestigious individual accolade cherished amongst players, rewarding top class displays of skill, athleticism, talent and commitment throughout the season.

“They provides us all with a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the magnificent achievements of our leading players and to reward their dedication and contribution to the game, on a national stage.”
