FIFA to compensate Togo keeper shot at Cup

Kodjovi Obilale, who was shot when the Togolese bus was attacked by gunmen, will receive €18,500 from FIFA.

WORLD SOCCER’S governing body FIFA is to pay $25,000 (€18,500) in compensation to the Togolese goalkeeper shot when the team bus was attacked by armed rebels ahead of the African Cup of Nations in January.

Kodjovi Obilale was one of three people shot when the bus was attacked just as it entered the host nation of Angola on January 8; the other two victims were killed, while Obilale was shot twice in the back and has not walked since.

Having undergone surgery to restore some damage, the goalkeeper has been in a wheelchair since his surgery and is unable to move his right leg below the knee. He is also unable to feel in either foot.

Obilale wrote to FIFA president Sepp Blatter after being stonewalled by the Angolan tournament organisers and the Confederation of African Football, and has been told he will receive a payout from FIFA’s humanitarian fund despite the fact that FIFA had no responsibility for the attack.

If I was a famous player like Drogba and others, I don’t think things would have happened like this. I find it a bit abhorrent and sickening that they have abandoned me.

The BBC says the FIFA payment, when combined with other donations, will only cover three of his seven months of hospital treatment.
