Power-ranking the 7 best fictional sports

From Quidditch to Baseketball, here are the sports we’d love to play.

TV AND MOVIES have given us any number of crazy and imaginative sports that, for reasons such as gravity, lack of magical powers, etc, don’t exist in the real world.

With the Easter weekend, a lot of us will be spending more time in front of the TV than normal, catching up on DVDs, etc so, with that in mind, we decided we’d gather around TheScore.ie water-cooler and discuss our favourite fictional sports.

7. Pyramid

Movie: Battlestar Galactica

How to play: A close quarters ball game played on a pyramid-shaped court, hence the name. The objective is apparently to score points by getting the ball into a goal at the top of the pyramid. Full contact is allowed  and once a player has been tackled, they must pass the ball.

6. Whack-bat

Movie: Fantastic Mr. Fox

How to play: There are three grabbers, three taggers, five twig-runners, one center tagger, and the player at whack-bat making 13 players. The center tagger lights a pine-cone on fire and throws it to the player at whack-bat. The player hits the pine-cone and runs to knock a cedar stick off the cross rods. Then the twig-runners dash back and forth until the pine-cone burns out and calls “Hotbox”. The team with the most scoredowns wins.

5. Rollerball

Movie: Rollerball

How to play: Two teams of 10 players skate in laps, trying to pick up a magnetic ball to throw through a metal hoop set in the wall. The ball is put in play when it is fired from a cannon at the skaters. The best part? Three members of each team are allowed to ride motorcycles through the track.

4. Quidditch

Harry Potter Harry Potter

Movie: Harry Potter

How to play: Two team of seven players (three Chasers, two Beaters, one Keeper and one Seeker) chase after four balls (a Quaffle, two Bludgers and a Golder Snitch). Each goal is worth 10 points but the game is only over when the Seeker catches the Snitch. Being Harry Potter helps.

3. BASEketball

Movie: BASEketball

How to play: Like baseball, the game lasts for nine innings and is played between two teams with three players each. You can score from shooting from one of four zones with scores coming in singles right the way up to home runs. On defence, a psyche-out — abusing your opponent — is allowed.

2. Dom-Jot

Star Trek Parodies Star Trek Parodies

Series: Star Trek The Next Generation

How to play: A combination of billiards and pinball played with a ball and cue on an irregularly shaped table. Scoring is quite like pool with the rolling of the ‘terik’ into straight nines considered the best move.

1. Light cycles

Frank Schenk / YouTube

Movie: Tron

How to play: To win, you have to force your opponent  into the trail of light behind your bike or one of the walls around the ‘track’. High-speed, high-intensity and the potential for chaos, what’s not to love?

What have we missed? Loads I’m sure so let us know in the comments below.
