Ferrari chiefs targets Vettel

Italian team would love the triple world champion in their car.

THE FERRARI CHAIRMAN Luca di Montezemolo says he would like to see triple world champion Sebastian Vettel at the Italian team.

Vettel, 25, became the youngest driver to win three Formula One titles last month when he finished just three points ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the drivers’ standings.

Di Montezemolo has made no secret of his admiration for Vettel, who is contracted to Red Bull until 2016.

“Vettel is a future potential Ferrari driver,” he told German magazine Auto Motor and Sport.

“If Alonso was to retire tomorrow, for whatever reason, then I want Vettel.

“He’s young, he has both feet on the floor, he is down to earth and he has an overwhelming will to win.

“(Michael) Schumacher pointed him out to me four years ago, because he knows Vettel from his karting days.

“I must say Michael was right.”

Di Montezemolo, however, conceded that it was unlikely Vettel and Alonso would race for the same team in their current form.

“Alonso and Vettel, that would be difficult,” he said.
