IRELAND’S FERGAL O’BRIEN has shipped some sharp criticism from his opponent David Gilbert, for his playing style which saw him qualify for the World Snooker championships.
O’Brien booked his ticket to the Crucible after winning the longest frame in the history of professional snooker on Wednesday night.
The final frame unofficially clocked in at 1:59:40, some 19 minutes longer than the previous record for the longest frame.
And while the patient tactics ultimately served him well, his opponent did not appreciate the slow pace.
“The pace of play was diabolical from pretty much start to finish, and it wasn’t me.
When asked if it was a gruelling match, Gilbert said: “It’s worse than that – that’s not snooker.”
Responding to the criticism, O’Brien said that this was the style of play that was needed to get the win, but added that he is unlikely to try it again.
“In future would I like to play like that again? Absolutely not. Did I overplay shots, did I double-check stuff? Probably yes, but such was the pressure.”
O’Brien will now go on to face top seed, and defending champion, Mark Selby in the first round of the World Championship. O’Brien says he is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.
“He’s a fantastic player. It’s always a special occasion, with the defending champion coming back on the Saturday and playing all day Saturday as is the tradition. Happy days.”
