Woman struck by broken bat at Fenway Park is 'expected to survive'

A spokesperson for Boston Police has revealed the condition of the Fenway Park spectator injured by a broken bat has improved.

THE WOMAN STRUCK in the face by a broken bat at Fenway Park is expected to survive, according to the Boston Police.

Tonya Carpenter was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on Friday after a fragment from Oakland Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrieโ€™s bat flew into the crowd and hit her, causing serious facial injuries.

But after spending the night in hospital, Carpenter is understood to be in a serious but stable condition on Saturday.

โ€œShe is expected to survive,โ€ Boston police spokesperson Rachel McGuire told the Boston Globe.

Carpenter was injured in the second inning of the Boston Red Soxโ€™s 4-2 victory over the Athletics at Fenway Park, with the woman taken from the stadium on a stretcher after being attended to by paramedics for several minutes.

Poor woman. Though she will always be remembered as the most interesting thing to happen in baseball since the Red Sox won the World(!?) series.
