Fenlon still the boss as Bohs' woes continue

Nutsy looks like he’s staying for the moment but Bohs were lucky to escape with a point on Friday, writes Alan Smith.

AFTER A WEEK of will he or won’t he, it looks like Pat Fenlon will now remain at Dalymount Park for the meantime.

Speaking to FM104 after Barry Murphy saved a last-minute penalty to keep Bohemians’ hands on a point away to St Patrick’s Athletic, Fenlon confirmed that he met with the board on Thursday night and “it went quite well.”

He refused to comment on the matter with members of the print media after the game, insisting he would only answer questions about the 0-0 draw, but it does look like he’ll stay at Phibsboro for the short-term after telling us that “the club knows where I stand and I know where they stand.”

On the field, his side were lucky to come away from Inchicore with a draw after being struck down by a plague of injuries. Fenlon was forced to make all three substitutions inside 50 minutes, with Ollie Cahill, his replacement Lee Dixon and Killian Brennan all picking up knocks.

Murphy was also injured, unable to take kick-outs and really struggling, but battling through the pain, he managed to pull off a spectacular save from Paul Crowley to keep it scoreless after a game where Pat’s had all the better chances in front of goal.

Emphatic

Shamrock Rovers, as expected, hammered Drogheda United 4-0 at Hunky Dory Park to keep the Louth side rooted to the foot of the table with just a point from five games. The Hoops were on fire as a brace from Gary Twigg and a goal apiece from Ciaran Kilduff and Billy Dennehy moved them onto 13 points at the summit.

Three points behind them are Sligo Rovers who had John Dillon to thank, his strike on the half hour mark sinking local rivals Galway United at Terryland Park. The game also saw the return of Joseph Ndo, who came off the bench for a short cameo in the latter stages, and when he gets back into the swing of things you should see the Bit O’Red step it up another level in pursuit of the champions.

While there had been some bore draws in recent weeks, there was no drought this weekend and Dundalk continued to show their attacking prowess with a comfortable 3-1 win over UCD. Ross Gaynor and the amazing Daniel Kearns scored twice in three minutes just before the break, and despite Paul Corry scoring for the Students with 20 minutes remaining, Jason Byrne replied two minutes later to wrap up the points.

The final Premier Division game of the weekend saw Derry City take three hard-fought points off Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds thanks to goals from Daniel Lafferty and James McLean, although Jake Kelly did level the tie up at 1-1 with his first goal of the season.

Roddy returns

As expected, there was plenty of drama at Turner’s Cross in the First Division. In front of the joint biggest attendance of the weekend across the two tiers (2006 – the exact same as St Pat’s v Bohs), Cork City came back from going a goal down twice to grab 2-2 draw against Roddy Collins’ Monaghan United.

All the pre-match talk surrounded the managers, and although it was played down at full-time, the real action was on the field as Declan O’Brien got his Mons career off to a scintillating start with two goals, while Graham Cummins and Davin O’Neill replied for City who still remain unbeaten despite having three draws in five games.

Shelbourne could only draw at home to Limerick however, meaning Cork remain a point behind them, although Longford Town moved into second place after a 2-0 win in the El Clasico against Athlone Town on Saturday night.

Finally, Mervue United grabbed their second victory of the season with an incredible 5-3 win away to Wexford Youths, while Waterford United had an easy day at the office in Drom where they dispatched of Salthill Devon 2-0.
