REMEMBER THE INCESSANT drone of those god-awful vuvuzelas at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa? Well, it turns out that they can serve another purpose apart from making the football world’s collective eardrums bleed.

They can be used to attack referees.

A spectator ran on to the pitch and struck the ref during yesterday’s South African Premiership match between the Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows. The incident occurred after Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane was red-carded in the first half.

Despite the referee’s best efforts, he got a whack across the back of the shoulder blades before security apprehended the intruder at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

The game finished in a scoreless draw.
