FAI Cup wrap: Bohs no match for Drogs, Byrne hits a brace for Seagulls

There were no major upsets in tonight’s second round fixtures.

DROGHEDA UNITED PROGRESSED to the third round of the FAI Ford Cup this evening after a convincing 3-0 win over Bohemians at Dalymount Park.

The game was only five minutes old when Peter Hynes flicked on the ball for Stephen Quigley and the defender drilled his shot home from inside the box.

Seven minutes before half-time, the visitors doubled their advantage thanks to skipper Declan ‘Fabio’ O’Brien – the striker scoring with his head after a decent ball from Jason Marks.

Fabio came close with a lob shortly after half-time and, with 23 minutes left on the clock, Philip Hand wrapped up the win for the Drogs with an unstoppable strike from 10 yards.

Bray Wanderers also booked their place in the next round with Jason Byrne’s two first half goals sealing victory over Mervue United.

The veteran centre forward continued his rich vein of form after last week’s hat-trick against Drogheda by notching a brace at the Carlisle Grounds. The opener on 21 minutes was followed up with a second from the spot four minutes later.

Patrick Hogan found the back of the net twice for Dundalk as they romped home to a 4-0 win against Leinster Senior League side Phoenix – Kurtis Byrne and Tiernan Mulvenna adding the other goals.

In Galway, Billy Dennehy was on the double for Shamrock Rovers as the Hoops overcame Salthill Devon. The winger’s strikes arrived  in the 62nd and 79th minutes respectively.

Shelbourne saw off Munster Senior League club Bandon by a 3-0 scoreline, Finn Harps got the better of Wexford Youths, winning 2-1, and Tolka Rovers drew with College Corinthians in the night’s other game.
