FAI CUP ORGANISERS were left red-faced by an embarrassing typo on the medals presented to yesterday’s finalists.
Sligo Rovers left it late before beating Drogheda 3-2 in one of the most dramatic finishes in the competition’s 90-year history.
But when players from both sides checked their medals afterwards, they spotted that the champions’ name was mistakenly misspelled as ‘Silgo Rovers.’
“This was an error made by our supplier,” an FAI spokesperson told TheScore.ie.
“The matter will be subject to a full review and the medals will be replaced.”
The supplier has made a full and unreserved apology for the mistake.
Although the typo is an embarrassing one, players from both sides tried to see the funny side of it today.
Drogheda’s Philip Hand tweeted a picture of his runner-up medal, saying: “I thought silgo rovers were very good.”
Sligo’s Alan Keane told TheScore.ie: “We only noticed it on the bus on the way back to Sligo.
“Our skipper Danny Ventre was having a look and spotted it: ‘Silgo.’ We got a few laughs out of that.”
“As long as the right words — cup winners — are on the back we won’t worry too much about what’s written on the back.”
