Fabregas: I'm not trying to lure Messi to Chelsea

He would say that though, wouldn’t he?

CESC FABREGAS HAS dismissed suggestions that he has been trying to lure Lionel Messi away from Barcelona to Chelsea.

The Argentina international, 27, has been heavily linked with a move away from the Camp Nou side after falling out with club president Josep Bartomeu, while he also endures a difficult relationship with head coach Luis Enrique.

Chelsea are allegedly one of the clubs closely monitoring Messi’s situation at Barcelona, but Fabregas has denied that he has been sounding out his former team-mate over a potential move.

“His situation has been made out to be worse than it really is. Messi is happy at Barcelona and the club’s happy with him,” Fabregas told Onda Cero.

I get a bad feeling about it when people are saying that I am trying to convince Messi to join Chelsea. What makes people think I can discuss contracts? I am just a footballer.

“Leo will do whatever makes him happy. As his friend and former team-mate, it would be great if I get the chance to play with him again.

“I don’t really know Luis Enrique. I know Messi, though, and I really doubt that the things people say happened really did happen. Leo is a quiet guy and I have never seen anything like that during the three years we were team-mates.”

The Spain international then went on to explain his decision to leave Barcelona for Chelsea ahead of the 2014-15 campaign and revealed that ex-Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, now back at Stamford Bridge, played a key role in the transfer.

I never imagined I could end up at Chelsea a few months ago, especially bearing in mind my past at Arsenal. But you can never rule out anything in football.

“I had no trouble making a decision after I had opted to leave Barcelona. I had to be selfish and look at the best option for myself. I spoke with Mourinho and I had made my decision within 10 minutes. He convinced me to join Chelsea.”

Getting Jermaine Defoe and swapping him for Jozy Altidore is probably one of the best transfer deals ever.
