STEVEN GERRARD PRODUCED a brilliant free-kick to give Liverpool late hope of saving their Champions League dream tonight.

Gerrard provided the inspiration in curling home a free-kick with ten minutes to go to bring his team level but they couldn’t find the winner to rescue their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Liverpool got off to a terrible start as a powerful Fabian Frei strike from the edge of the box found the corner of the net to give Basel a 1-0 lead at Anfield.

The Reds went into tonight’s vital clash knowing a win was needed in order for them to reach the round of 16, and Frei’s goal was a huge blow to their ambitions.

Things then went from bad to worse for Liverpool, as Lazar Marković was harshly sent off following this incident and Basel held on to progress on a bad night for the hosts at Anfield.
