Martinez, who led Wigan to FA Cup glory last season, saw his new signing Lacina Traore backheel the Toffees into an early lead in the fifth round cup tie. Signed on loan from Monaco in January, the striker put the home side 1-0 up on their quest to reach the quarter finals.
The visitors struck back on 17 minutes when diminutive midfielder Jonathan de Guzman stole into the box to head home.
Everton started Irish internationals Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy for the cup tie while Swansea, perhaps prioritising Premier League safety, fielded a number of fringe players.
With 25 minutes to play, a horrendous back-pass effort from Swansea’s Neil Taylor was intercepted by Steven Naismith, who poked the ball past Gerhard Tremmel. 2-1 became 3-1 five minutes later as Naismith was felled in the box. Leighton Baines swept home the resulting penalty.
