Europa League clash suspended after stadium catches fire

The clash between AZ Alkmaar and Atromitos Athens was called off

A FIRE THAT broke out on the roof of AZ Alkmaar’s home stadium forced the Dutch side’s Europa League clash with Atromitos Athens to be abandoned.

Stadium and match officials were forced to halt proceedings, with the Greek side leading 1-0, after 57 minutes as the fire spread. A floodlight failure in the ground signalled trouble but the blaze could not be safely contained.

The game began in controversial circumstances when AZ’s Markus Henriksen was shown a harsh red card. Facing 10-men, Artromitos took a 1-0 lead reduced the aggregate deficit to 3-2.

The remainder of the game will be played this morning before the Europa League group stages draw takes place in Monaco.
