It will be the first time the clubs meet in European competition.

LIVERPOOL WILL FACE Manchester United in the last 16 of the Europa League after the Premier League giants were paired together in this afternoon’s draw.

It will be the first time the two clubs meet in European competition.

The first-leg will take place at Anfield on Thursday 10 March while the second-leg at Old Trafford will be a week later on 17 March.

Liverpool booked their place in the last 16 with a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Augsburg while Man United survived a scare before eventually getting past FC Midtylland.

Louis van Gaal’s men have been rewarded for last night’s 5-1 win at Old Trafford with a mouth-watering tie against their old rivals.

The sides have faced each other twice this season with United winning both games, most recently 1-0 at Anfield thanks to Wayne Rooney’s late goal.

Tottenham, meanwhile, were drawn with German side Borussia Dortmund in another headline tie of the round.

The winner of the Europa League earns a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Europa League last 16 draw:

  • Shakhtar Donetsk v Anderlecht
  • FC Basel v Sevilla
  • Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen
  • Athletic Bilbao v Valencia
  • Liverpool v Manchester United
  • Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham
  • Sparta Prague v Lazio
  • Fenerbahce v Braga
