UEFA to announce Europa League incentive

Winners set to earn a Champions League spot.

UEFA ARE SET to announce plans to award the winners of the Europa League a place in the following season’s Champions League on Friday.

Currently, the winners of Europe’s second-tier competition are not guaranteed a European spot which is not earned by virtue of their league finish or winning a domestic trophy.

However, in an attempt to increase the prestige surrounding the tournament, Europe’s football governing body have agreed to offer a UEFA Champions League place to the victors.

The plans will not affect each member country’s allotted UEFA Champions League qualification spots, with an extra place set to be granted in special cases whereby a team wins the UEFA Europa League but does not finish high enough domestically.

The winners of the UEFA Champions League are already guaranteed the opportunity to defend their crown, qualifying automatically for the next campaign.

The 2012-13 winners, Chelsea, qualified for the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League after finishing third in the Premier League.
