Could Armitage be about to return to the England fold? Tony Marshall/EMPICS Sport

Could England be about to change their own rules to allow Steffon Armitage into World Cup squad?

At least one report today says yes.

EVERY RULE HAS an exception and it seems the English Rugby Football Union could be about to make a pretty big one with reports today that Toulon’s Steffon Armitage could be included in their World Cup squad.

According to The Times (£), the RFU will relax its directive that players based outside of England are not eligible for the national team with a home World Cup cited as an “exceptional circumstance”.

Armitage – who plays his rugby with Toulon in France – has made a name for himself as one of the best back rows in world rugby and was named as the ERC European Player of the Year in 2014 after winning the Top 14 and Heineken Cup.

The former Saracens and London Irish forward joined the French club in 2011 having made just five appearances for England.
