HARRY MAGUIRE AND DELE Alli scored as England comfortably defeated Sweden 2-0 in Samara on Saturday to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
Leicester defender Maguire headed in the opening goal from a corner on 30 minutes, with Alli adding a second just before the hour.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then produced a series of crucial saves in the final half-hour to seal Englandโs long-awaited spot in the last four.
It was just a second England victory over Sweden in nine competitive meetings, and sets up a clash with either hosts Russia or Croatia on July 11 in Moscow for a place in the final.
Southgate stuck with the same team that overcame Colombia on penalties in the last 16, while Sebastian Larsson returned for Sweden after missing the 1-0 win over Switzerland through suspension.
Viktor Claesson drilled over for Sweden early on with an ambitious attempt from distance, while Harry Kane, the tournamentโs leading scorer with six goals, dragged wide after a penetrating run by Raheem Sterling.

Sweden manager Janne Andersson had warned his side England were a match for them at set-pieces, and so it proved when Maguire connected with Ashley Youngโs corner after a low-key first half hour.
Maguire outjumped the much smaller Emil Forsberg to nod low into the corner, as England scored for the eighth time in Russia from a dead-ball situation.
The lively Sterling should have doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time when he brilliantly controlled Jordan Hendersonโs lofted pass, but he was unable to find a way past Robin Olsen and his follow-up was blocked by Andreas Granqvist.
Pickford had relatively little to do in a quiet first half, but the England goalkeeper produced a vital stop to claw away a Marcus Berg header minutes after the restart.

England promptly cranked up the pressure and pulled further ahead on 59 minutes when a completely unmarked Alli sent a thumping header past Olsen after a first-time cross by Jesse Lingard.
Maguire then lashed over after a scene of panic in the Sweden area as England chased a third goal, although they were twice indebted to Pickford for preserving their two-goal lead.
The Everton shot-stopper thrust out a hand to superbly keep out Claessonโs low strike from 10 yards following a neat lay-off by Berg.
Pickford then showed terrific reflexes to tip over an effort from Berg, who shot on the turn after being picked out in the area by substitute John Guidetti.
Southgate withdrew Henderson for Eric Dier in the closing stages and will have a full squad to choose from in the semi-final, injuries permitting.

Itโs getting a little bit too close for comfort now lads.
@Leadรณg: may have to look at moving to outer Mongolia if it comes home!
@Leadรณg: Croatia ok but not exactly brilliant
@Leadรณg: After 52 years of being โlostโ, football is almost โhomeโโฆโฆโฆletโs all hope it doesnโt get โlostโ again on the โhomeโ straightโฆโฆโฆJaysus, weโll never hear the end of it if they win!
@Leadรณg: I donโt mind the English team winning, itโs their supporters/medias modesty when they do so that gets me!
@Martin Horan: Bit jealous that Ireland will NEVER win it ?
@Gus Sheridan: looking a better bet for the rugby
@Martin Horan: Then donโt look at it
@Steve Monk: So simple!
@Gus Sheridan: Occupies my every waking moment.
That was Swedenโs 17th game in the whole World Cup process,, they have played and seen of the Dutch, Italians, Germans, Mexicans as well as others on their way to a World Cup 1/4 final and thatโs how they play??? Fair play to England,, they can only play whatโs in front of them and they played well and beat them easily without getting out of 2nd gear,,, Swedenโs performance was awful for a team that has made the last eight,,so disappointingโฆโฆ.
@Gordon Larney: While Iโm enjoying this World Cup I think itโs more to do with the drama than any real quality if Iโm honest. Something seriously wrong in international football if three teams like England Sweden and Russia can make it to the last 8.
@Eric Djemba-Djemba: itโs important to be honest Eric :-)
@Eric Djemba-Djemba: anybody can lose on any given day. Teams donโt get to the last 8 by accident.
@Eric Djemba-Djemba: yeah Ireland should have been there blah blah
Well deserved, looking very good
@Puc Around: up to the first goal they only had 3 shots on target in almost 3 hours of football , their not looking that good and Sweden were crap.
@Philip Mc dermott: haters gonna hate
@Philip Mc dermott: Who cares about whatโs happened up till now. We are in the semi finals of the world cup! Where are ye?
@Philip Mc dermott: Thatโs harsh, we all have a thing in ireland about hating them but can we not just get behind them for once?
@Puc Around: Have to hand it to them, could you imagine if it was us. Theyโve actually a great chance of getting to a final, and anything is possible then, although France and Belgium are much stronger on paper.
@Peter: Valid point. This is actually a concern for me as Iโm here 20 years with irish born children. I might have to nationalise and start hating England!
@Aging Lothario: Thatโs exactly my thinking
@jimmypnufc: not hating at all merely stating facts, theyโve had the easiest possible route to the semis they lost to belgiumโs 2nd team and scraped past Colombia if they win it theyโll deserve it but until now they donโt deserve all the hype imo.
@Steve Monk: Iโm Iโm American thank God Iโve been talking to friends/family at home whoโve already had enough of all the its coming home bullshit.
@Philip Mc dermott: tell them to stop watching sky
@Philip Mc dermott: ridiculous statement, your US family wonโt hear anything of England and footballs coming home on US media. Get a life
@Philip Mc dermott: No hype just win when it matters..
@Steve Monk: youโre not very bright are you? I live in the USA and have been happily for 11 years the friends/family I speak of are in Ireland, ya know were Iโm from.
@bmul: good idea and ITV and bbc
@Philip Mc dermott: You werenโt here in the 90โs then when it was โole ole ole oleโ morning noon and night, and the laughable โyouโll never beat the Irishโ pot and kettle here by the bucketful!! As for the bias media RTEฬ panel have houlahan on a par with Ronaldo/Messi for the last 4 years!!!
@jimmypnufc: come on England even if its only to piss off the haters here!
@Philip Mc dermott: Fair point I misunderstood your comment BUT I still stand by my comment, if you or your family donโt like the way English media goes on about English football then donโt bloody read it!
@Peter:oh Always some numpty has to mention Brexit .
@Peter: Know how to spell check .
@Steve Monk: I think he means his friends and family back in Ireland. Donโt be so sensitive.
@Philip Mckenna: Iโve always hated โyouโll never beat the Irishโ back then and especially nowadays.
@Philip Mc dermott: I donโt read the english tabloids. I do read widely elsewhere though and Iโve not seen a single article โhypingโ this England team. Weโre limited. We all know it. Every article and analysis Iโve seen or heard recognises that fact.
Do I think weโll win it? Thereโs a chance but I donโt think we will.
Am I bored of the small minded jealousy of a few who hate us? Yes.
@Philip Mc dermott: Just fins it incredibly ironic when Irish fans criticize us for singing its coming home sayin we think weโre great and arrogant garbage, when the country sings youโll never beat the Irish!!!!!! After scrapping a 0-0 with Egypt or the like?? The hypocrisy on here is beyond belief
Best team won. Fair play to England.
Havenโt been tested yet
@Crpytoalchol: hopefully wonโt be for another 180 minutes either.
Seen nothing so far to indicate they can beat a solid team like Belgium or Croatia. They did play whatโs in front of them though which is all you can do
@JustOneScoop: Then open your eyes . Best england side in 25 years
@JustOneScoop: hopefully Russia win tonight and France next week and we wonโt have to worry about them.
@Robert Preston: are you mad? The English team with Lampard Gerrard Ferdinand Terry Cole et all was twice the team this lot is they just bottled it.
@Philip Mc dermott: players where better but never really made a team
@bmul: true
@Philip Mc dermott: What did they achieve then . Not much
@Robert Preston: what does best England side in 25 years have to do if there are better international squads you have to play against โฆ.. I agree theyโre are best English side btw
@JustOneScoop:They are still ayoung team Good riddance to Rooney and company . Lets see how far they go .Germany ,Spain,brazil and portugal all out .
@Robert Preston: A slight correctionโฆmost โeffectiveโ side in 22 yearsโฆI suppose its semantics when one uses โbestโ, anyway..good for the young lads, they seem quite a happy and humble bunch with a manager that seems a decent fellaโฆI expect the more experienced French or Belgians or Croatians will be a bridge too far..but Iโll enjoy watching their questโฆafter all..thatโs why we watch sport ??
@Desmond Cassidy: Dont be so sure
@Robert Preston: Huh ???
Itโs coming home
Thatโs what happens when you bring in a coach who has coached the under 21โฒs delighted for the man Utd players representing England
It baffles me , this new I hope England win the World Cup stuff. Dunphy on rte gushin all over them. Theyve had a piss easy qualifyn group, same in the group stages, a terrible colombian team, and now sweden aswell being poor. They were singin footballs comin home since they pit 6 past a useless panama team. Their fans have been sc#m at every tournament for years. And the media and celebrities jumpin on the bandwagon last couple of weeks. People are called xenephobic then for not wanting them to win ha, of the usual go to, you watch the premier league and speak english haha
@DMur: Nice to see you, to see you begrudge!
@Fearghal: haha great stuff Fearghal, proving my point lad. Who said I was begruding them. Did i not point out facts no? Easy qualifying, same with group. Singing football coming home after 2 games. A bad colombian team, and a sweden team with no 1 upfront. And quoting bruce Forsyth ? Very strange โฆ.
@Fearghal: everything he said was spot on, and let me tell you if they do win it within 6 months to a year you will wish they never did because you will be so sick of hearing about it, growing up I had to constantly listen to crap about the 66 team and I grew up in the 80โฒs and 90โฒs 20/30 years after they won the fecking thing.
@DMur: And no bias in your side I see.
@DMur: Dunphy slated France yesterday and now raving about England. I would agree they havenโt been challenged yet.
@DMur: yawn
@Billy Bruce: on my side? Course thereโs bias, I do not want them to win , and itโs not begruding, why would I want them to win? Like I have already said, piss easy groups, poor teams in knock out games. Arrogant media, arrogant fans (for the most part) . Have caused trouble at every tournament.And for the fact that they are still bangin on about 66 !!
@Philip Mc dermott: we could all talk about Italia 90 again, and again. Youโve no clue about how low key things have been in England about our team for years.
Try coming to terms with whatever makes you so unbelievably bitter.
@DMur: But nice to see that your over it all the same!!!!
@Simon Connolly: maybe throw in a few more exclamation points to get your view across haha. And Iโd have to have a problem for me to get over it.
@DMur: ooh sour and bitter! You say youโre not begrudging and then give almost a dictionary definition of it! Bit sad that someone using exclamation marks can get under your skin so easily!! Anyway you havenโt a clue what youโre talking about if you think the English media have been arrogant or hyped at thus world cup. Thereโs been nothing like the usual drivel, which is actually quite refreshing as a football fan. But sure continue to be the miserable, bitter, petty person that you are coming across as!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ps is that enough exclamation marks?!!!!
@Generation Snowflake: true
@Simon Connolly: before the World cup they were all humble, then 2 games in they were back to the old usual carry on, fans and media. and no Simon , you havenโt, so please throw a few more in next time, we both know you can do so much better .
@Philip Exley: who talks about Italia 90? Were did that come from, and if Iโm bitter I donโt give a shit , its ridiculous the hype around this team because they beat Panama? Sweden? Ridiculous.
@Philip Mc dermott: or maybe because there in the world cup semi final, further than I thought they would get
@bmul: they can only beat whatโs in front of them and fair play theyโve done that I just think the hype is way over the top, itโs not an anti English thing its an anti English press thing.
@Generation Snowflake: not a week has gone by? Who are ya hanging around with? Packie Bonner! Spoofer.
@DMur: we only hear about it because we are still intrinsically tied the them. Do you think people in France are moaning about this or Germans?
We are just as bad for the historical stuff. People still go on about Henry!
@Philip Mc dermott: Everyone talks about 90 and RTEฬ mention Saipan everytime a World Cup comes along, showed houghton Italy goal first game this World Cup! Ole ole ole banging on every tine u left house in the 90โs?? And Sweden topped their group ahead of Germany who they shouldโve beat and hammered Mexico 3-0 but we beat them and suddenly their garbage! Not anti English yeh right keep telling yourself that? Also what u think Belgian tv or French tv is like?? You see ours so you donโt know ???
@Philip Mckenna: 1: nobody talks about Italia 90 not were Iโm from in Ireland or not among the Irish I know in the states, 2 :I agree rte should shut up about saipan,3: Sweden were garbage today, in general their a decent team today they were terrible and thatโs what I said in the first place 4:I am not anti English and I donโt give a flying f#$k if you believe that or not and finally 5: Belgium and France have every right to go a bit ott over there teams because there the best teams left and belgiumโs reserves have already beaten England or did you forget???
@Philip Mc dermott: Iโd write a reasoned reply but your astounding level of bitterness is well beyond the reach of reason.
So I see their qualification group was Slovakia Slovenia Lithuania, Malta then a WC group of Panama, Tunisia, (2nd string Belgium) now Sweden and into a work cup semi final.
The only top 20 team they have played to get into a semi final was Colombia ranked 16th in world without James. So england team has played 1 full team top 20 ranked team throughout qualifying and all stages to get to a semi final. Thats crazy
@Mentis Green: not really, only two teams in the top 10 left in the tournament. Also theyโve beaten three of the top twenty ranked teams at the tournament.
Pickford and alli during that game just reminded me why and how much I donโt want them to go all the way! Great keeper all the same though.
@Ronan: Pickford fast becoming the easiest player to dislike. Good saves, but this shite of shouting at the defenders after the save grates on me. Both efforts the defenders where putting the attackers under pressure, they were both goal side, defenders canโt stop every attack, thatโs what Pickford is there for.
@Ronan: get over yourself
@mmk: agreed Mark, chip on his shoulder is growing every game!
@mmk: itโs called encouragementโฆ. high pressure and release it to his own players..
@Dan: didnโt look like encouragement to me, look how buffon & Chellini bounced off each other when one covered for the other, that was encouragement.
@mmk: I remember a Danish keeper that used to do it all the time. Heโd never stop shouting at his defense. Quite the keeper.
Did anyone think George Hamilton or Ray Haughton think were supporting England. Such biased commentary
@Ronaldo Blanc: itโs where they made a living and the best team won
@Ronaldo Blanc: boo hoo
Maguire always around when trouble occurs.. any yellow cards yet ?
They got lucky against a team who could not play. The joke stop at the next round.
@Dominic Leleu: if they win the World Cup you will still say they were lucky. Even Dunphy is praising them.
@Dominic Leleu: just another hater
@Billy Bruce: I will indeed.
@jimmypnufc: just telling a view different than yours does not make me a hater. TRUMP STYLE little picks donโt scare anyone.
I heard Jermain Jenas compare Swedenโs level to that of Burnley. I thought at the time it was a bit of an insult to Sweden. I was wrong. It was a massive insult to Burnley
Iโd love to see England win, Iโd lived in the U.K. in the 90s, sound people, the majority love the irish.
Starting to get scary now, two wins away from a World Cup. Wonโt hear the end of this for a long time.
@fella la fella: You donโt have to watch British tv, read their papers or follow their clubs.
@fella la fella: I knowโฆ..great is it not โฆ.. lovlyyyyy
@grandslamkbo: oh shut up you muppet, I have nothing against the English people just donโt like their national team. Their fans sing anti Irish songs all the time and the media are unbearable. Itโs called a rivalry do your research.
Fair play to england, into the semiโs however i donโt think they will beat either croatia, france or Belgium. They are in a with a chance and must be confident.
Well done to England. After all they have been through as a nation under threat from terrorists like SF/IRA and islamists. They played great and hopefully they get to the final. I donโt know about winning as we would never hear the end of it.
@Cranky: jump of the roof their lad.
@Cranky: fool
@Cranky: well done for slipping the SF/IRA reference in. Their tendrils of evil are everywhere
Football coming home
@Tod Curtis: you should go home Tod
Sweden forgot to turn up today. Praise be the lord either Croatia or Russia give engerland a proper test and see them go bye bye :)
@Declan Moran: Shall we have a rematch then . Ireland did not qualify because thereshite . And before you say anything i am Irish
Oh god
Well done England for getting as far as the semiโs. Im Irish and lived here for 30 years. If Ireland is playing international I shout for them. If not its going to be England. They played well. And I hope they go on to the finals.
Shame about the begrudging bits. But if Ireland had ever won back in the day. Im sure we would still be talking about it.
Fair play to England but Sweden were atrocious
Belgium v England Final.
Englandโs quarter final and all the other quarter finals proved two things:
1. Englandโs football style is a vindication for Martin Oโ Neil of sorts. It shows there is a place in modern football for long ball and set piece driven game plans. The problem is that Ireland donโt have the skills to execute. Englandโs style is what MON aspires to and it does work.
2. Football is just as elitist as rugby and tennis. A guaranteed all-European semi-final draw and the lack of a non-European winner since 2002 calls into question football as a โglobalโ sport.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: Sorry but youโre talking nonsense.
To say football is as elitist like rugby union is complete nonsense, and to call into question its status as a global sport is ridiculous , and Iโd guess youโre a rugby fan looking for a reaction. Yes, European countries are stronger, but the game is played world wide in every region. Countries like Panama played in their first ever world cup, countries as small as Croatia and Belgium have a real chance of making the final. Countries like Iran took part and were organised and hard to beat, yes European teams are stronger, but countries like Uruguay, Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil would have almost come to a stand still while their team played. Football is the one true global sport.
@James Greene: Tennis, rugby and golf are equally played in every corner of the globe. The variety of ability level does not reduce the worldwide nature of a sport. You guessed wrong. I follow. any sport that involves Irish athletes at an elite level, including football There is an arrogance among football fans who wear the term โglobal sportโ as a misguided badge of honour. Thatโs the first time Iโve heard statistically sound point being โnonsenseโ.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: what exactly was statistically sound about calling football elitist? A game played in slums around the world, elitist? You think kids in the slums of South America are playing golf and tennis? Also, it was you who suggested that because South American sides are not as strong as European sides meant it was no longer a global game. I never suggested for a second the variety of ability level does or does not reduce the worldwide nature of a sport. I would suggest the interest in the game itself in each country would determine the worldwide nature of a game. If you think there is another sport on the planet that can generate as much interest as football across the planet then id argue you are very much mistaken.
@James Greene The โstatistically soundโ point I was making was the lack of a lack of a non-European world cup winner since 2002. If weโre taking interest as the deciding factor in a sport being global, then look at America and rugby as an example. Rugby is the fastest growing sport in the United States, having hosted the World Rugby 7s earlier this year and reached the latter stages of the tournament. Host rights can only be gained with sufficient interest in the sport. Have been to โslumsโ ?Otherwise, who are we to sugest that people donโt play golf and tennis there.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: you are talking crap. Tennis and golf are externally elitist, especially within Europe. Football is played in the worst parts of countries within Europe, so you even go further than Europe you call it elitist I donโt know.
Football has no boundaries and can be played by anyone of any age and of any ability, some places you donโt even need a ball. This is what helps to make it global. South American teams have simply not performed recently they have some of the best teams on paper.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: yeah, 4 world cups on a row will be won by a European side, but to suggest that because of that football is elitist and no longer a global sport is ridiculous. Dublin have won the last three senior football all ireland titles, I guess that means the game is no longer an all ireland game.
@Conor Alexander Lynott: Your talking garbage!!! So a non European country should b let win??? Is it European nations fault s American countryโs are pants, or should Belgium and France let Brazil and Uruguay win?? Also elitist??? Do u think slum kids in Africa/Brazil run home after brunch and grab their golf clubs?? No they play football the worlds biggest most played and watched sport always will be! Talk sense cos our argument is pathetic!
Solid win. Sweden are stink though. Theyโll have a tougher game in the semis against the Croats but a bit of luck will get em into the final.
@Jim Demps: have Russia scratched from the quarters. A bit presumptuous.
@Jim Demps: Have a horrible feeling Russia will win
@Billy Bruce: yeah youโre right. I canโt see Russia making the semi though.
@Jim Demps: anything can and has happened in this World Cup.
@Jim Demps:
Id say you have the union jack hanging out your window jim !
@Just a buiscuit: why? Were Britain playing?
@Jim Demps:
Do English supporters not wave around a union jack aswell as a st georgeโs flag .??You should know jim since your Englands biggest fan in Ireland.
@Just a buiscuit: have a look at the picture above and tell me how many union jacks you see at the game today.
@Just a buiscuit: not anymore
@bmul: I knew asking him to count would quieten him.
Well done to England to date. They havenโt beat much but they arenโt expected to go far anyway. They are technically enepth but they have a serious weapon and that is their set piece. However I donโt see them going any further. Fair play regardless.
I would have enjoyed Hamilton and houghton.. hard to listen to commentary from brits especially when they mentioned the blockade.. but they were much better than Sweden and have a great chance of getting to the final which would make it more interesting for me.. they have good players..great chance for them..
Solid win. Goes to show how inept we are at football.
Delighted for england but sweden were clueless
Probably the worst England team in 50 years but it does seem with a bit of luck in the final they could actually win it.
Itโs a bit like Leicesterโs win none of the big teams turned up
@matthew o reilly: Go suck on a lemon
Comments were at 66. I just have to change it.
I wouldnโt mind getting behind England, being our neighbours and all that but Jasus theyโd be banging on about it for another 50 years!
Back line is tight, Maguire immense but Sterling and Lingarrd need to be dropped.. lazy, selfish players. If they replaced them with 2 team players theyโve won the final.
Sweden were crapโฆ.made the England side look good.
Surprised that Bozo Johnston isnโt claiming this as evidence that Brexit is delivering?!! Suddenly Britain is great againโฆ.โฝ๏ธ
Sweden were crapโฆ..made the England side look good.
third place play off wonโt be a bad watch now as well.
