650,000 want England v Australia tickets as World Cup organisers report record demand

Anxious fans will find out on Saturday if they were lucky.

MORE THAN FIVE million ticket applications have been lodged in the mad scramble for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Anxious fans will find out on Saturday if they were lucky following a record level of demand in last month’s general sale.

The Pool A clash between co-hosts England and Australia is set to be the hottest seat in town after organisers received requests for 650,000 tickets — enough to fill Twickenham nearly eight times over.

There was also huge interest in the pool games between England and Wales, New Zealand and Argentina, and Australia and Wales, while half a million hopefuls applied for the World Cup Final on 31 October.

In total 950,000 tickets were sold in the September ballot, organisers said, with demand exceeding supply at every price category for 23 of the 48 games.

A further 340,000 tickets were made available to clubs throughout England and Wales as part of the Rugby Community Programme.

Fans who missed out in the September ballot will be given priority when the remaining tickets go on sale in November.

“We are thrilled with demand for tickets a year out from the tournament, and the record level of demand we saw in September is a terrific indicator of the general interest and excitement for Rugby World Cup 2015,” Debbie Jevans, CEO of England Rugby 2015 said.

“Demand has exceeded supply for a high number of our matches, and the only downside of such strong demand is that there will inevitably be some disappointment when rugby fans are notified of the results of their applications on Saturday.”
