DERRY’S HOPES OF Division 2 survival were dealt a blow this morning with reports that star forward Enda Muldoon has decided to quit inter-county football.
Muldoon, 34, told the Irish Daily Star that “there would be no going back” after deciding to call time on a 15-year senior career with the Oak Leaf county.
Although the Ballinderry clubman has not featured in any of Derry’s league games so far this season, this morning’s reports came as a something of a shock to county officials. Derry secretary Liam Peoples told TheScore.ie this morning that he was not aware of Muldoon’s decision.
Muldoon didn’t travel to Newbridge last Sunday for the 2-13 to 2-08 defeat against Kildare, a result which left John Brennan’s men second from bottom in Division Two and very much in danger of relegation with just one win from four games.

If they are to turn their season around, they will have to do it without the man once hailed by Joe Brolly as “the greatest ever natural talent to have played with Derry”. Muldoon won an All-Star in 2004 for his performances as Derry marched to an All-Ireland semi-final, where they were beaten by Kerry.
“That door has closed. I’m not going to retire one week and come back the next week,” Muldoon told the Irish Daily Star. “There will be a void in my life, but I’m just going to have to get something else to take over that void.”
