WATCH: Comically bad Adebayor penalty miss blunts Spurs

CLINT DEMPSEY’S DOUBLE and a remarkable rearguard action got Tottenham Hotspur to the brink of the Europa League semi-finals.

Spurs drew 2-2 with Basel on Thursday and, with the match tied 4-4 after extra time, the game went to penalties. Ton Huddlestone and Emmanuel Adebayor then went to work.

Huddlestone saw his penalty attempt saved but Adebayor sent his effort into orbit:

Marcelo Diaz buried the winning kick for Basel, sending the Swiss supporters into delirium.

“My first thoughts are for the players, they set a great example. The way they approached the competition, playing every Thursday and Sunday,” Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas told ITV after the match.

“We made the country feel different about the competition.”
