Gold for Ireland! Ellen Keane powers to first place in 100m breaststroke SB8 final

The 23-year-old earned Ireland’s first gold medal at the 2018 European Paraswimmimg Championships.

ELLEN KEANE DELIVERED a third medal for Ireland on the final day of the 2018 European Paraswimmimg Championships in Dublin this evening in front of a packed home crowd.

The Dubliner powered to victory in the 100m breaststroke SB8, delivering her country’s first gold medal with an excellent and composed performance — finishing 5.35 seconds ahead of Spanish rival Nuria Marques Soto and Greece’s Efthymia Gkouli.

The 2016 Rio medalist secured bronze in the 200m Individual Medley final on Friday but stole the show at the National Aquatic Centre on Sunday, leading from start to finish after executing a pinpoint dive.

Keane’s success brings Ireland’s medal tally to three at this year’s European Championships, with 16-year-old Nicole Turner yesterday earning silver in the women’s 50 metres Butterfly S6.
